Recruiting the Best/Brightest to the Graphic Arts

The December 2009 edition of NAPL Business Review, (chock-full of great articles) included one co-authored by John Berthelsen, past International President of the IAPHC and president of Suttle-Straus Printing in Madison, Wisconsin, and Ray Prince the guru of pressroom operations who has encyclopedic knowledge in his post at NAPL, and is an old friend of the IAPHC.

The article is:  "You can Find Great People for the Future" and the link to the article kindly provided by our friends at NAPL is here:

The article appealed to us in that in includes some actionable items for both the graphic arts educator as well as the printing and graphic arts firms in a given locale.

We have many educators in the membership ranks of the IAPHC - people who are incredibly dedicated, usually underpaid , and extremely supportive of their students.

In recent days, Art Lindauer, graphic arts instructor at Venice High School / Super Shop 9 in Venice, California, and Steve Caputo, graphic arts professor at New York City College of Technology, and Gary Mohn, instructor at Hennepin Technical College in Brooklyn, Park Minnesota have remitted ther annual membership renewals.

Gary Mohn's website (http://htcprinting.com) is worth a look for any educator, and we thank Gary for including a link to the IAPHC website on his site!

Most educators in our ranks have long been early adopters of Flip Wilson theology -- "The Church of Whasshappening Now"  dude!  And accordingly, they have needed to become very adept and conversant with all kinds of software and social networking sites too.

Art Lindauer asked whether we could endorse him on LinkedIn, and this is what we wrote (Note that Art has not yet posted this to his LinkedIn profile):

“Art Lindauer is a longtime and very supportive member of the IAPHC, The Graphic Professionals Resource Network. He has won many awards for his educational acumen, but those awards do not reveal a deeper humanity. He teaches his kids the basics, and the practical, and he provides insights and life lessons in so doing. Perhaps most important in these challenging times, he refuses to deny the advance of technological progress. His students will know that lifelong learning is a core reality of any successful person and Art himself embraces these developments in no small part so that he can converse with "his kids" in their own idiom. From his Facebook posts, to his reactions to items we post on the IAPHC's website, (www.iaphc.org) one senses the deep caring Art Lindauer has for the educational process, his young charges trying to find their way, and the global graphics industry. The IAPHC has honored Art before, and it is my honor to recommend him without reservation as a good and gentle soul doing the very hard, and utterly critical, and too often taken for granted but essential work of molding young lives.” February 28, 2010
